In his article "Where Linux is hot, and where it's not" published
July 18, Ziff Davis Internet Linux & Open Source editor and IT expert,
Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols shares to his readers which part of the globe
Linux is sought after the most and where it is not. By using Google Trends
(www.google.com/trends) with normalized results, meaning results are weighted
not by raw numbers, but by numbers compared to the population of a city
or country, he realized he was mistaken in thinking which place has the
most interest in Linux.
According to Vaughan-Nichols, USA is expected to be on top of the list
if one has to merely look at the number of searches for Linux because
of its size. But when using Google Trends which provides normalized results
or results compared to its population, the outcome provides a totally
different picture.
The normalized result says that the number one city searching for all
things Linux is Munich, Germany. Hamburg, Berlin comes in second and Frankfurt
Am Main trails as third. This makes the scenario a German dominated Linux
interest list says Vaughan-Nichols. Only Sao Paulo, Brazil was from outside
Europe.
For the country that has the most interest in Linux, Russia topped the
list, followed by India. Germany ranked as ninth.
One might be interested in the United States but for this IT-laden country,
no American city nor the country as a whole even made the top ten.
According to Vaughan-Nichols, US leads the way when it comes to looking
into whether "Microsoft sucks" and to be more specific, the
state would be Seattle, Washington.
"No one, however, looks to see if 'Linux sucks'," says Vaughan-Nicols.
